Strasbourg does not reveal itself immediately. It does not try to impress with noise or spectacle. But once you walk along its canals, hear the soft sound of trams and see the old half-timbered houses of Petite France, the city slowly begins to open itself to you.

The true heart of Strasbourg is the magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral built from pink sandstone. Its spire was once the tallest in the world, and inside, the ancient astronomical clock still gathers visitors every day. From the top, the city unfolds like an old map: rooftops, bridges, canals, the River Ill and endless Alsatian houses stretching into the distance.

Nearby lies the Petite France district, where millers and tanners once lived. Today it is perhaps the most beautiful part of the city: quiet water, old bridges, flowers on the windows and a rare sense of European calm. It is the kind of place where you want to sit by the river with a glass of Alsatian wine and simply watch the evening arrive.

But Strasbourg is not only a medieval postcard. It is also home to the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and many international institutions. Few cities combine ancient cathedrals and modern glass buildings so naturally.

And then there are the scents of Strasbourg: cinnamon, coffee and fresh pastries drifting through the streets. Especially in winter, when the Christmas markets turn the city into a glowing theatre of lights. Yet even without the holidays, Strasbourg carries something deeply warm and human.
