Hundreds of apartments, land lots, cottages and townhouses…All owned by the Nazarbayev University, making it richest University of this country.  Its scientific value, however, is not proportionate to its wealth.

Land, Mansions, Flats

According to data from Committee on State Assets and Privatizations, the NU owns 394 real estate assets, but if we download Excel spreadsheets with the indication of particular assets, we will see that there are 315 of them (6 pages in those spreadsheets are empty).  So, what constitutes that real estate owned solely by the Unversty?

1. Land allotments – 6 in total, 165.94 hectares, inclusive of land in the vicinity of Str.Kabanbay-Batyr (campus), Str. Kerey-Zhanibek, Turan Ave. and Str. Tole-bi, all in Astana.  And a tiny, 24-hectare land in Borovoye Township.
2. 78 Real Estate assets, inclusive of 14 townhouses, business-centers, total area of all of which assets is 471,630 square meters. Those are campus buildings, Kabanbay-Batyr 53 and a building located on Str.Kerey-Zhanibek Khandar, Building 5/1.
3. 201 flats and dorms with the total area of 118,663 square meters. 154 flats, to be exact in the Highvill Apartment Block (Koshkarbayev Str. Building 2, 46 flats in total) and Severnoye Siyaniye Complexes 1 and 2 (Complex 1 — Str. Akhmet Baitursynuly, Building 5, 86 flats and 37 technical rooms and parking places, Complex -2, i.e. at Str,Akhmet Baitursynuly 5/2 – 22 flats).

Areas

Smallest flats are 51 to 55 square meters.  Those are probably 1-bedroom flats.  3 flats are 222.6 square meters.  Those are probably the ones with 4-5 bedrooms.  There are flats 90 and 130 square meters and more.  I suppose, total area depends on a hierarchic position a person holds with the NU.

Officially, things look, as above, BUT

if we dig deeper, we will find out that in 2017, the NU owned 600 real estate assets.  So, where are the missing ones.  I suppose, they will find out later

Interesting now is the position of those protecting the NU, because a Kazakh National University Professor, who earns KZT 300 thousand and lives in a 15 sq.m. dorm room is in the same conditions as is an NU Professor who lives in a POSH flat in Astana and earns KZT 5 million a month.  Now lets us compare other investments into both Universities and the load those two Professors have to carry… Those protecting the NU probably think that the output of the two Professors must be the same.
