The tragedy at a hostel in Almaty claimed the lives of 13 people. Calls for finding and punishing those responsible are already emerging, but who should be held accountable?

Renowned businessman Marat Bakkulov expressed his thoughts on the matter very directly:

«Not long ago, a friend, when ordering fire safety equipment, tried to save money at all costs, just to have something. It’s the usual psychology of short-sighted people.

Likewise, probably, the owner of the hostel where 13 people died had a similarly narrow view. The blame lies not with the moratorium, not with the firefighters who are supposedly obligated to check, not with the akimat, but with his direct personal guilt and responsibility.

He should sit for a long time so that others are not tempted to economize or remain ignorant. Not the scapegoat, but the owner and director, if there is one.

Only then will others think. If no one is punished, we will continue to hear about the loss of lives, and not just once.
