The tragedy at an Almaty hostel has stirred society, with a portion of the public blaming the state’s regulatory bodies for the incident. However, experts insist: the focus should not be shifted away from holding the real culprits of the people’s deaths accountable.

Here’s what the well-known political analyst Marat Shybutov writes on his Telegram channel:

«It’s interesting how things are going with us – in connection with the fire at the hostel where 13 people died, for some reason, everyone is focused on the regulatory bodies. They didn’t inspect, didn’t check, didn’t keep an eye.

But isn’t the owner of the hostel involved? Is this some kind of kindergarten – the child is not to blame, it’s the caregiver and nanny who didn’t take care. Excuse me, we’re all adults here. Fire safety rules and, in general, legislation must be adhered to regardless of whether an inspection is scheduled for tomorrow or not.

The safety and legality of the hostel are primarily the responsibility of its owner. He should be held accountable. It’s time to be adults and understand that every action or inaction has its price. And sometimes that price is human lives.»
